Industrial-Scale Roll-to-Roll Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition for Li-ion Batteries
We are excited to invite you to our upcoming live webinar and live Q&A, this time hosted together with our partner AzoNetwork. While it won’t take place at our Spatial ALD Hub, it will be, as always, for ALD enthusiasts like you. In this webinar, spatial ALD experts Dr. Paul Poodt and Alexander Bouman will share the latest insights on how spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) can enhance Li-ion battery performance. They will also demonstrate how R2R spatial ALD can be scaled up to industrial manufacturing levels.

What to expect in the webinar
Next-generation Li-ion batteries must combine high energy density with long cycle life. Thin, conformal coatings on cathode and anode materials can enhance capacity retention and stability by acting as artificial SEI and CEI layers, protecting the electrode–electrolyte interfaces. Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is ideally suited for such coatings, offering precise control of film thickness and composition, with excellent conformality on complex, porous electrode surfaces. For example, LiF has emerged as a promising SEI component due to its chemical robustness and wide electrochemical stability window.
SparkNano has developed a plasma-enhanced spatial ALD process using a novel lithium precursor to deposit pure, crystalline LiF at 100–200 °C—compatible with Li metal anodes and other sensitive substrates. Applying this coating to Li-ion anodes has demonstrated up to a 10% improvement in capacity retention.
To meet the productivity demands of battery manufacturing, we developed the SparkNano Omega™ Roll-to-Roll (R2R) spatial ALD tool for industrial-scale production. The SparkNano Omega™ enables web speeds of up to 100 meters per minute and widths up to 1.5 meters, making ALD coatings feasible for large-scale Li-ion battery fabrication.
In this webinar, we will showcase how spatial ALD enhances Li-ion battery performance and demonstrate the scalability of R2R spatial ALD to industrial manufacturing levels.
You will gain insights into how:
- Thin, conformal ALD coatings protect electrodes and boost Li-ion battery cycle life and capacity retention.
- SparkNano’s plasma-enhanced spatial ALD deposits pure LiF at low temperatures, compatible with sensitive anodes.
- The SparkNano Omega™ Roll-to-Roll spatial ALD tool enables high-throughput, large-scale battery manufacturing.
